EDITOR
Responsible for book development of new and revised titles from manuscript stage to bound book. Directly supervise and coordinate authors, evaluators, copyeditors and indexers for approximately forty titles assigned per year. Assist in the development of budgets, cover and catalog copy, and sales information sheets.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Develop projects with newly signed authors and arrange for revision of existing titles
  • Guide project through specialized departments for all phases of production, including editing, design, and formatting
  • Ensure products are delivered on time and within budget
  • Act as author's advocate and contact for the rest of the publishing house
  • Evaluate manuscript
  • Hire indexers and translators as needed and supervise their work
  • Hire copyeditors
  • Work with marketing department on catalog copy and covers
  • Propose new title concepts

    Internal Working Relationships: Interact with Editorial, Art, Production and Marketing/Promotion personnel in reviewing galleys and page proofs and answering editorial queries.

    Position requires:
  • BA degree with five years book publishing experience and solid editorial skills with text, trade and non-fiction projects
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Computer literate with knowledge of Windows-Microsoft Word environment preferred
  • Excellent decision making ability
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Some management experience helpful

    ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT DISTRIBUTION CENTER
    Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties to provide support to the DC Manager in the daily activities of the Distribution Center by perrforming the following duties:

  • Enters inventory receiving documents into AS400 computer program. Assigns inventory to locations or offsite locations
  • Respond to emails, telephone calls and messages, files, prepare spreadsheets, reports, photocopying and other clerical duties as requested
  • Records PTO requests for DC employees into calendar spreadsheet and submits to Human Resources
  • Coordinates pick up and delivery schedules with the Production department, vendors and trucking companies for inbound domestic freight
  • Prepares and maintains the daily receiving schedule
  • Completes vendor charge-backs and sends documentation to departments
  • Organizes packing list for foreign shipments and coordinates purchase orders and receiving documents
  • Notify DC Manager and Production department of problems and issues concerning incoming shipments. Interacts with management and office personnel
  • Reviews incoming titles for possible destruction of old edition/out of print items. Requests authorization for destruction
  • Reviews and maintains inventory price and carton count changes
  • Issues purchase orders for DC supplies and services
  • Records carton usage and generates purchase orders to supply vendors
  • Collects data, prints cycle count sheets, sorts and distributes reports, provides training and assistance and performs other clerical tasks and support as directed by management
  • Calls for recycling pick up and prepares bills of lading and certificate of destruction

    Internal Working Relationship: Interact with DC management and staff, Production, Sales, Human Resources, Payroll and Finance personnel.

    Positions Requires:
  • Two years prior experience as an administrative assistant in a distribution or warehouse environment
  • Good computer and data entry skills, MS Word and Excel a must
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written), interpersonal skills and professional telephone manner
  • Fluency in English (verbal and written a must) Bilingual Spanish/English is helpful
  • Detail oriented, well organized, good prioritizing ability and a self-starter

    1. For initial consideration of your project, query letters are recommended along with your author credentials.
      NOTE: We do not accept proposals via e-mail, fax, CDs, or computer disk.

    3. Include a self-addressed postcard if you desire notification of receipt of material.

    4. Include a large, self-addressed, stamped envelope to accommodate the return of your material in case of rejection.

    5. Indicate if the submitted material is in response to a positive reply to a query letter previously sent to Barron’s; also, write "Requested Material" on the package.

    6. Simultaneous submissions are welcomed.

    7. It is not necessary to have a literary agent in order to submit material.

    8. Due to the large volume of unsolicited submissions received, complete evaluation of a proposal may take up to eight months. A system for tracking the status of unsolicited material does not exist. Therefore, do not call about the status of individual proposals.

    When submitting a work of juvenile fiction:

    • Include the manuscript in its entirety.
    • Artwork is not necessary. If artwork is available, include a sample.
    • Include author’s credentials.

    When submitting a work of adult or juvenile nonfiction:

    • Include a table of contents and two sample chapters.
    • Include a brief description of the work. This overview should cite the market being targeted (e.g., children, ages 2-4; secondary school teachers; etc.)
    • Include author’s credentials.

    We will contact you if additional information or material is needed in order to properly evaluate your project. Do not send additional material unless specifically requested. It will be discarded.

    If you would like a catalog, please submit a 9x12" self-addressed, stamped envelope.
