Steven Jay Schneider, General Editor - All books by this author

Long before the release of such memorable gangster films as The Godfather and Bonnie and Clyde, tough guys portrayed by Edward G. Robinson, Jimmy Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and other pioneers in the crime genre were shooting up movie screens across America. This intensely readable summary of the best gangster films ever made spans the decades from the 1930s to the present day. Films are presented in chronological order to illustrate the genre’s development and the impact early artists had on later directors, actors, and technicians. Plot summaries are presented, casts and credits are listed, and illustrations include ad posters and evocative movie stills. More than 200 illustrations.

Films cited in this book include:

• Angels With Dirty Faces • Dillinger • Get Shorty • King of New York • Donnie Brasco • The Big Sleep • Bloody Mama • The Godfather • The Departed • Get Carter • Infernal Affairs • Force of Evil • Goodfellas • Little Caesar • The Krays • Hard-Boiled • Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels • Marked Woman • The Glass Key • The Killers • Carlito’s Way • Bonnie and Clyde • Pιpι le Moko • Point Blank • Reservoir Dogs • Underworld • Rififi • White Heat • The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre • Sexy Beast • Scarface • Shaft • Touch of Evil • Prizzi’s Honor • The Musketeers of Pig Alley • Road to Perdition • The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond • The French Connection • Menace II Society • New Jack City • Heat • The Long Good Friday • This Gun for Hire • The Usual Suspects • Casino • Dead End • Brother • City Streets . . . and many more
